May Challenge - Inspired by Fashion

Hi guys!

Happy Friday! Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?? I hope everyone gets a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather! Well... if you're in California anyway haha. I took my test yesterday and everything went really well! So happy =D So today I think I'm going to go hiking and then to the beach! Yayyy.

Anyways, this month I'm participating in my first challenge, and I'm so excited about it! It was created by the Hobby Polish Bloggers, a fantastic group of very sweet and supportive ladies who all share an obsession with polish (of course!). This challenge is perfect for me because there are only four prompts throughout the whole month! Meaning I can do just one look a week, which is much more practical for me than, say, every day.

The first theme is "Inspired by Fashion." Click the "Read more" link to see the look I created and my inspiration!

So just for starters, here's the whole May challenge line-up:

Such fun prompts, and I can't get over how great it is to only have to do one look a week! It's a lot less stressful and therefore a lot more fun, which is what this nail blogging thing is all about!  =)

When I started thinking about what I wanted to do, I looked at some spring/summer 2013 runway collections that were shown at Fashion Week. There were a great amount of florals (obviously), black and white, and stripes, none of which really inspired me in terms of nail art because I really wanted to push myself to try something new and different that I've never done before. So far, I've pretty much just experimented with striping tape and dotting tools, and I wanted to branch out from that. I also just got a new set of 15 Mash nail art brushes for only $10 on Amazon, so of course I had to try them out! I'm planning on writing a post about them soon.

Once I came across this Marc by Marc Jacobs look, I was instantly inspired.

At first I wanted to do something like the scarf because I LOVE the colors in it... but I wasn't quite sure how I would pull it off. But then I saw the awesome turquoise and pink belt with the blue and yellow plaid. Once again, great colors and awesome mix of prints!

For my design, I started with two coats of Essie First Timer. Then I used one of my new brushes to paint on the abstract pink designs using China Glaze Pink Voltage, an awesome neon pink. Once that dried, I used my artist roommate's blue acrylic paint to create the line in the middle. Lastly, I used Jessica Banana Peel, a pastel yellow creme, to make the dots down the middle. I didn't add any topcoat, because I like the combination of the texture and the mix of matte and shinier finishes - I think it's more in line with the dynamic feel of the Marc by Marc Jacobs look.

My design didn't turn out perfectly, but that's okay! I'm still really proud of this because I've never tried free-hand nail art with brushes before, and for a first attempt, I really like the result. If I were to do it over again, I would make the blue stripe thinner and add more of the pink designs. But overall, I'm happy. =)

So here's the final result:

What do you guys think? I'm glad I was able to find such a cool fashion look that truly inspired me. Don't forget to check out the other ladies' submissions to the May challenge! I have an Inlinkz link down below.

I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!
